bathing

Baths and bathing have long been considered of medical importance to man. In Greece there are the ruins of a bathtub and water system built over 3, 000 years ago. The Romans had warm public baths. In some as many as 3, 000 persons could bathe at the same time.
Treating disease by bathing has been popular for centuries. Moden medical bathing or hydrotherapy, first became popular in Europe and by the late 1700’s also became popular in the United States.
For many years frequent bathing was believed to be bad for one’s health. Ordinary bathing just to be clean was avoided and perfunewas often used to cover up body smells !
By the 1770’s doctors began to say that soap and water were good for health. They believed that it was good for people to be cleaned. Slowly people began to bathe more frequently. During the Victorian Age of the late 19th century, taking a bath on Saturday night became common.
In the United States ordinary bathing was slow to become popular. During the 18th and early 19th centuries, many Americans were known as “The Great Unwashed!” In one American city, for example, a person could only take a bath every thirty days !That was a law!
Frequency of bathing today is partly a matter of habit. People know that bathing for cleanness is important to health. Doctors know that dirty bodies increase the chance of diseases. Consequently, in the United States, people generally bathe often. Some people bathe once a day at least. They consider a daily bath essential to good health.

The marvelous telephone and television network that has now enmeshed the whole world, making all men neighbours, cannot be extended into space. It will never be possible to converse with anyone on another planet. Even with today's radio equipment, the messages will take minutes—sometimes hours—on their journey, because radio and light waves travel at the same limited speed of 186, 000 miles a second.
Twenty years from now you will be able to listen to a friend on Mars, but the words you hear will have left his mouth at least three minutes earlier, and your reply will take a corresponding time to reach him. In such circumstances, an exchange of verbal messages is possible—but not a conversation.
To a culture which has come to take instantaneous communication for granted, as part of the very structure of civilized life, this “time barrier” may have a profound psychological impact. It will be a perpetual reminder of universal laws and limitations against which not all our technology can ever prevail. For it seems as certain as anything can be that no signal—still less any material object—can ever travel faster than light.
The velocity of light is the ultimate speed limit, being part of the very structure of space and time. Within the narrow confines of the solar system, it will not handicap us too severely. At the worst, these will amount to twenty hours—the time it takes a radio signal to span the orbit of Pluto, the outer-most planet.
It is when we move out beyond the confines of the solar system that we come face to face with an altogether new order of cosmic reality. Even today, many otherwise educated men—like those savages who can count to three but lump together all numbers beyond four—cannot grasp the profound distinction between solar and stellar space. The first is the space enclosing our neighbouring worlds, the planets; the second is that which embraces those distant suns, the stars, and it is literally millions of times greater. There is no such abrupt change of scale in the terrestrial affairs.
Many conservative scientists, appalled by these cosmic gulfs, have denied that they can ever be crossed. Some people never learn; those who sixty years ago scoffed at the possibility of flight, and ten years ago laughed at the idea of travel to the planets, are now quite sure that the stars will always be beyond our reach. And again they are wrong, for they have failed to grasp the great lesson of our age—that if something is possible in theory, and no fundamental scientific laws oppose its realization, then sooner or later it will be achieved.
One day we shall discover a really efficient means of propelling our space vehicles. Every technical device is always developed to its limit and the ultimate speed for spaceships is the velocity of light. They will never reach that goal, but they will get very near it. And then the nearest star will be less than five years voyaging from the earth.

After Reading David Copperfield

What is your childhood like? Is it full of happiness or sadness? Is it full of harmony or quarrel? Or full of unfair treatment like the childhood of David, the main hero of “David Copperfield”, written by Charles Dickens in 1849?
David Copperfield was born six months after his father’s death. He had a happy childhood before his ninth birthday. But after his mother’s remarry and death, everything changed. His had to work in the laboratory of his stepfather when he was only ten years old! David ran away to his aunt for shelter, and begun his adventure of a new life.
Perhaps you will be curious about his later life. Yes, later on, David did have a happy life: he was send to school by his kind aunt and married a lovely girl and had many kids in the end.

You might think it’s too easy for David to be successful: What did he do? He just ran away to his aunt! But, if you were David Copperfield, would you run away? Do you have the courage to run away? Do you have the ability to run away? Can you conquer the difficulties you might have on your way to go? Well, you might be irresolute, hesitant since most of us, who are the apple of our parents’ eyes, the princes or princesses at home, are not able to suffer those possible sufferings. Therefore, we may miss the best opportunity to run away and even miss the chance to be happy or successful!

Do you think David’s trip is a smooth sailing? No! He had been tricked and lost all his money, so he even walked to Dover, where his aunt lived. Children, who were born after 1990, are growing under multiple protections of parents, teachers and relatives, we don’t have to worry about the fees of education, we don’t have to worry about food, and we don’t have to worry about housing either! We are so lucky to own all these things! And we are clever, healthy, and have rich materials for living and study, but we are still in some aspects. What are we penurious, and what are we still in want of? We are in want of something on the spirit, like courage, bravery and willpower! We are in want of some abilities, like how to conquer difficulties, which might happen to us everyday! Then, what kind of courage? The courage to fight against thieves and robbers? No! It’s the duty of the police officers’, not yours! What you need, is the courage too make a good choice or a right decision! The courage to be responsible for your action! Then, what kind of abilities? The ability to save people’s life? No! It’s the responsibility of the doctors, not yours! What you need is the abilities to conquer the difficulties brought by your decision!

You may ask: If David’s aunt also treated him very bad, what would he do? Would he run away again? I don’t know whether he will run or fight against or do something else. But I do know that what ever he does, he won’t stop pursuing the steps of happiness! What we need is not simply the courage to make a good decision or a choice. What we really need, is the belief and courage to seek the heaven of joy and cheer.

So, don’t be afraid of your right decision! Make full preparation and then, go ahead! Don’t be hesitant! Many persons become successful, because they made a good decision and got ready, and then went right to their goals! This kind of character will make lots of contributions to our future life!

Ha-ha, let me ask you again! Would you run away or not, if you were David Copperfield? Not matter what your answers are, please don’t stop searching your happiness.
